The engine coolant temperature gauge ECT sending unit is a temperature dependant resistor (thermistor). The resistance of the thermistor decreases as the coolant temperature increases. It is connected to the coolant temperature gauge on the gauge cluster. When faulty, it does not trigger a Check Engine light but will cause an erroneous output reading of the actual coolant temperature. Before testing the ECT sending unit, test the coolant gauge and connections first while adhering to proper testing procedures.

The correct resistance-to-coolant temperature specs of the ECT sending unit are as follows; 137 Ohms @ 133°F (56°C) and 46-30 Ohms @ 185-212°F (85°C - 100°C)
